Eating Out

Philadelphia's restaurant scene was long overshadowed by New York's, but since the city's "Restaurant Renaissance" in the 1970s and waves of immigration from Asia and Africa, it has become one of the best food cities on the East Coast. The large student population around University City (home to Drexel and Penn) supports a wealth of cheap, interesting places.

Sang Kee Peking Duck House in Chinatown is a modest-looking place with outstanding Chinese food, fast service, and low prices. The duck is the star, but everything on the menu delivers. Address: 238 N. 9th Street. Tel: 215-925-7532.

Le Bec-Fin on Walnut Street was for decades Philadelphia's most acclaimed fine dining restaurant. Chef Georges Perrier's French cuisine earned both a Mobil Five Star and AAA Five Diamond rating. Address: 1523 Walnut Street. Tel: 215-567-1000.

Pink Rose Pastry Shop is a quiet, charming bakery one block south of the bustling South Street scene. Address: 630 South 4th Street. Tel: 215-592-0565.

Chiangmai in nearby Conshohocken serves excellent Thai food at reasonable prices. The Chu Chee duck, Thai basil dishes, and sweet Thai iced tea are highlights. The restaurant is BYOB and popular enough that reservations are wise on weekends. Address: 108 Fayette Street, Conshohocken. Tel: 610-397-1757.
