Phipps Conservatory in Schenley Park is a 14-room Victorian greenhouse built in 1893 that has become one of the leading sustainable architecture showpieces in the United States, winning LEED certification for nearly every building on its campus. The combination is unusual and works well: the original ornate iron-and-glass Palm Court sits alongside new additions whose wood, glass, and living wall systems are as beautiful as they are efficient.
The seasonal flower shows are the main draw for many visitors — Phipps stages elaborate themed displays in the conservatory rooms several times a year, running from winter orchid shows through summer tropical exhibitions. The Japanese courtyard garden and the outdoor gardens are free to walk through in all seasons. The conservatory is adjacent to Schenley Park, where trails run through forest and past the restored Schenley Oval, making it easy to combine a conservatory visit with an afternoon in the park. Open daily; ticket required for the indoor rooms.
