St. Marys

Pennsylvania Wilds town of German Catholic roots, old brewing, and small-scale heritage sights.

St. Marys sits in the Pennsylvania Wilds, a small city with German Catholic roots and a practical, working-town feel. Its appeal is not one grand sight, but a cluster of local stories: a long-running family brewery, one of the country's smallest chapels, and museums that keep the town's immigrant and industrial history visible.

The best first stop is Straub Brewery, which has been brewing in St. Marys since the 1870s. Around town, Decker's Chapel is tiny but memorable, and the local historical society gives useful context for the German Catholic settlement that shaped the place.

St. Marys also works as a base for the Elk County countryside, but the town is worth a short visit on its own. Come for a half day, take the brewery tour if it is running, and leave time for the smaller local stops rather than rushing straight through.
