Scotia Barrens is the odd, sandy landscape west of State College where trails, scrubby barrens habitat, and traces of an old iron-mining settlement overlap. It is close enough for a quick walk, but different enough from campus lawns and town streets to feel like a small escape.
Hikers, mountain bikers, birders, and local-history hunters all use the area. Go with modest expectations and decent shoes: the charm is in the texture of the place, not in a single dramatic overlook.
