When to Go

State College has four distinct seasons, and the best time to visit depends entirely on what you are after. Autumn — September through November — is by far the most energetic time, when Penn State football turns the town into one of the most intense sporting environments in the country. The Nittany Valley is beautiful in fall foliage, typically peaking in mid-October, and the combination of crisp air, coloured ridges, and game day atmosphere is genuinely memorable. Hotel rooms near home games sell out months in advance.

Spring (April and May) brings the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in July — a popular outdoor art fair on College Avenue — and the academic year winds down with graduation ceremonies. Summer is quiet; the student population largely disappears, prices drop, and the surrounding countryside shifts into hiking and fishing season. The Rothrock State Forest trails are most pleasant in May-June and September-October.

Winter brings snow to the valley, typically from December through February. The university remains active but the town is quieter. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available in Rothrock Forest.
