Whitehall Ruins

Ruins of a Bromo-Seltzer heir's seafront mansion

Whitehall was the palatial summer estate of Captain Isaac Edward Emerson, inventor of the headache remedy Bromo-Seltzer, built on Ocean Road around 1910. The 60-room marble mansion was demolished in the 1960s after years of neglect; what survives is the long balustraded sea terrace, the entrance gateposts, and fragments of the formal gardens, all freely accessible from a roadside pull-off.

It is a quiet, melancholy spot — empty pedestal urns, weathered Italian-marble railings overlooking the surf — and an unexpected counterpoint to the busier beach scene to the north. Stop here if you are driving the length of Ocean Road; ten minutes is enough to walk the terrace and read the small interpretive plaque.
