Hunter House

Mid-18th-century Newport house museum showing the city’s mercantile wealth before the mansions.

Hunter House is a useful corrective to Newport's Gilded Age spectacle. Built in the mid-18th century on the harbour side of town, it belongs to the earlier mercantile Newport: shipowners, craftsmen, colonial trade, and Georgian interiors before the summer-cottage mansions took over the city's image.

The house museum is especially good if you care about furniture, decorative arts, and the social world that made Newport wealthy long before the Vanderbilts arrived. Its scale is domestic rather than overwhelming, which lets details stand out: woodwork, room proportions, harbour orientation, and the quiet confidence of a city that was already rich.
