The Parish Church of St. Helena dates to 1724, making it one of the oldest active churches in the South. The brick exterior, deep porch, and tall white spire are a textbook example of colonial Anglican architecture; inside, the box pews and clear-glass windows have been kept largely as they would have looked in the eighteenth century.
The walled churchyard is at least as interesting as the church itself. Two centuries of Beaufort's planter, merchant, and Confederate dead lie under crooked stone tombs, many of them tabby-built and worn by salt air. A walk through it before or after seeing the church is half the visit.
