Beaufort's pleasures are mostly slow ones: walking the antebellum streets under live oaks, drifting through the Lowcountry marshes, and learning the Gullah-Geechee story that runs through the Sea Islands. The historic district is compact enough to cover on foot in an afternoon, and the surrounding islands — Hunting, Hilton Head, Parris, Lady's — make for easy day trips.
