The Point

Beaufort's most photogenic residential neighbourhood — antebellum mansions under live oaks

The Point is the residential peninsula east of downtown — the part of the historic district where the largest and grandest of the antebellum mansions stand. The streets are narrow, the live oaks are enormous, and houses like the Berners Barnwell Sams House, the Edgar Fripp House (Tidalholm), and the Marshlands sit on deep lots that run down toward the Beaufort River.

It is the part of Beaufort that gets used in film: The Big Chill, Forrest Gump, The Prince of Tides, and The Great Santini all shot here. None of the houses are open to the public — they are private homes — but the neighbourhood is a walking destination in itself. Aim for golden hour, when the light through the moss is at its best.
