Hampton-Preston Mansion is one of Columbia's most important surviving historic houses, built in 1818 and later expanded into a grand urban estate. The rooms and grounds tell a story of wealth, taste, and political power, but also of the enslaved people whose work made that comfort possible.
The gardens are a large part of the visit, with paths, mature trees, and formal plantings that soften the city around it. Historic Columbia tours are the best way in, because the interpretation has moved beyond furniture and family names to the more complicated lives connected to the property.
