McEntire Joint National Guard Base

McEntire is an active South Carolina Air National Guard base just north of Hopkins, home to a wing of F-16 Fighting Falcons. You cannot wander in, but the base hosts a periodic open house and airshow, and at other times the roar of F-16s on training flights is a regular soundtrack across the Lower Richland County countryside.

The base began life as a civilian airfield in the 1940s before being taken over for military use. It is named for Brigadier General Barnie B. McEntire Jr., who died in 1961 deliberately steering a stricken jet away from a populated area outside Philadelphia.
