Mount Moriah Cemetery

Mount Moriah Cemetery climbs the steep hillside above the town and is the most evocative spot in Deadwood. Wild Bill Hickok, shot at a poker table in 1876, is buried here under a stone bust looking out over the gulch, with Calamity Jane interred a few feet away. Seth Bullock — sheriff, businessman, friend of Theodore Roosevelt — has the highest grave on the hill, which he requested for the view.

The cemetery is also a quiet reminder of how multi-ethnic Deadwood actually was: Chinese, Jewish, German and Cornish sections sit alongside one another, with separate gates and inscriptions in several scripts. There is a small visitor centre at the entrance and a modest admission fee. Walk up the hill in the morning before the tour buses arrive.

A story
Calamity Jane spent her last years far from Deadwood and asked, on her deathbed in 1903, to be buried next to Wild Bill Hickok — a man she had likely never been romantically involved with, though local legend insisted otherwise. The cemetery's board granted the wish and the two have lain side by side ever since.
