Deadwood is the rare frontier town that has preserved its nineteenth-century centre almost intact — the whole downtown is a National Historic Landmark. The two essential stops are Mount Moriah Cemetery (Wild Bill, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock) and the old saloon strip along Main Street, where you can still drink in the bar where Hickok was shot. Beyond that there are good local museums, the Days of '76 rodeo grounds, and a string of historic gold-mine sites in the surrounding hills.
