Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower

Three miles north-west of Deadwood, on the top of Mount Roosevelt, a thirty-foot stone tower rises out of the pine forest. Seth Bullock built it in 1919 as a private tribute to Theodore Roosevelt, who had died earlier that year, and dedicated it the same summer. It was the first formal monument to TR anywhere in the United States.

A short Forest Service trail (under a mile, mostly gentle) climbs from the parking lot to the tower, and from the top you get a view across the entire northern Black Hills — Deadwood gulch on one side, Spearfish Canyon falling away to the north. The site is free, lightly visited and one of the more rewarding short hikes in the area.

A story
Seth Bullock built the stone tower in 1919, days after Theodore Roosevelt's death, as a personal memorial to his lifelong friend. It was the first monument in the United States dedicated to TR — a full eight years before work on Mount Rushmore began.
