Prairie Village

Prairie Village is an open-air museum on the north shore of Lake Herman that preserves more than 40 historic buildings from the Dakota Territory era, relocated from across the region and reassembled into a walkable "village." The collection includes a country church, a general store, a schoolhouse, a railroad depot, and assorted farm buildings, all furnished with period equipment and artifacts.

The museum is particularly good for understanding the rhythms of Great Plains farming life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The largest event of the year is the annual threshing jamboree in late July, when antique steam engines and threshing machines are operated to demonstrate how wheat was processed before mechanized combines. If you can visit during this weekend, it is genuinely impressive.
