South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center

The South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center is the best museum stop in Pierre. Its exhibits cover Native nations, homesteading, statehood, ranching, politics, and the long argument between the romantic West and the harder realities of life on the plains.

Go before a wider South Dakota road trip if you can. It gives useful context for the Black Hills, the reservations, river towns, and the agricultural east without turning into a dry textbook.

A story
Much of the museum is built into the hillside, a practical design choice that also feels right for a state where landscape and memory are hard to separate. You enter South Dakota history partly underground.
