Fort Pierre sits across the Missouri from Pierre and is older in spirit than the capital. The name carries fur-trade, riverboat, military, and exploration associations, even though the modern town is small and quiet.
Crossing the river is worth it for the change in perspective. From the Fort Pierre side, Pierre looks less like an administrative centre and more like a prairie town lucky enough to sit on a great river bend.
