Fort Defiance Civil War Park occupies the bluffs at the confluence of the Red River and the Cumberland River, where earthworks from the Civil War fortification still survive in the landscape. The site has been developed as an interpretive park with walking trails, reconstructed cannon positions, and panels explaining both the Confederate and Union phases of occupation.
The views from the bluffs are the main reason to visit: a wide panorama over the Cumberland River valley with the city behind you. The park is a short drive from downtown — about 2 miles — and connects to the Riverwalk trail system. The earthwork ridgelines are still clearly visible from the main overlook.
