Johnson City has a craft beer scene that has grown considerably with the university and the outdoor tourism economy. Several good taprooms are clustered in and around the downtown. The town is also within striking distance of Bristol, Virginia — the birthplace of country music — where the annual Rhythm and Roots Reunion festival draws serious music fans each September.
