Gray Fossil Site

Active fossil dig and natural history museum preserving an ancient Appalachian ecosystem

The Gray Fossil Site is a rare active dig that you can visit without needing a research badge. Fossils discovered here preserve a warm, wet Appalachian ecosystem from millions of years ago, with finds that have included tapirs, rhinos, alligators, turtles, and red pandas. That mix makes the site feel wonderfully strange: prehistoric Tennessee was not the Tennessee outside the window.

The museum side is hands-on and family-friendly, but the real appeal is watching the scientific process in motion. Depending on the day, you may see preparation work, current excavation areas, or displays explaining how a road project unexpectedly exposed one of the region's most important fossil deposits.
