Mountain Home National Cemetery

Mountain Home National Cemetery is a United States national cemetery within the Mountain Home area of Johnson City, adjacent to the VA hospital and the East Tennessee State University medical campus. It is one of the older national cemeteries in the southeastern United States, established alongside the soldiers' home that once occupied the grounds.

The grounds are well maintained and peaceful, with rows of white marble markers under mature trees. The graves include veterans from the Civil War, both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and more recent conflicts. For visitors interested in military history or simply looking for a quiet walk on a pleasant afternoon, it is a dignified and moving place.

The cemetery is at Lamont Street, Mountain Home, open daily during daylight hours.

A story
Mountain Home was established in 1901 as a branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers — a network of facilities for Civil War veterans who had nowhere else to go. The cemetery grew from the home's own burial ground, and today contains nearly 10,000 graves spanning conflicts from the Civil War through the present day. Walking through it is a quiet reminder of how many wars have passed through a small city's history.
