Brother Juniper's

A Memphis institution for breakfast and brunch, with lines forming early on weekends

Brother Juniper's has been feeding Midtown Memphis since 1981, and on weekend mornings it is one of the busiest tables in the city. The menu is breakfast and lunch only, with a focus on big, unhurried plates: eggs and grits, French toast made from thick-cut bread, pancakes that lean more toward substance than airiness. The biscuits are excellent. The portions are generous in the way of places that have been feeding working people for decades.

The line forms early on Saturday and Sunday mornings — arrive before 9am if you want to avoid a significant wait. The dining room is small and the walls are covered in the kind of accumulated decor that comes from forty-plus years in the same location. It is unpretentious, friendly, and genuinely good in a way that justifies the cult following. It is also the kind of place that feels distinctly of its city and its neighborhood in a way that chain breakfast restaurants do not.
