Barton Springs Pool

Address 2201 Barton Springs Rd

Barton Springs Pool is a three-acre natural swimming hole in Zilker Park, fed by cold springs that maintain the water at a constant 68 degrees year-round. It is the heart of Austin's outdoor culture and one of those rare civic assets that works exactly as advertised: on a hot day, slipping into the spring-fed water is genuinely transcendent.

The pool is open year-round and draws swimmers in every season — the 68-degree water feels cold in winter and miraculous in summer when temperatures in the city reach 100°F or more. The grassy banks on either side of the pool are as important as the swimming: Austin's hippies, professors, politicians, and tech workers all share the lawn, which has its own democratic levelling effect. Admission is a few dollars; early mornings and weekday afternoons are least crowded.

A story
Barton Springs maintains a constant 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20°C) year-round because it is fed by an underground aquifer in the Edwards Plateau. The pool is also the only habitat of the Barton Springs salamander, a species found nowhere else on earth — discovered in 1993 and immediately listed as endangered. The salamander became the centre of a fierce political battle over Austin's development in the 1990s.
