Bremond Block

Address 400-500 W 7th St

The Bremond Block, between 7th and 8th Streets west of Guadalupe, is Austin's best-preserved collection of 19th-century residential architecture. Four mansions built by the Bremond family and their relatives between 1853 and 1910 still stand on the block, including Italianate, Greek Revival, and Eastlake-style houses that give a clear picture of affluent Austin life in the Victorian era.

Most of the buildings are now used as offices or event venues, but the exteriors are open to view from the street and the block is one of the few places in central Austin where the 19th century is still legible in the streetscape. The John Bremond House (1886) is the most elaborate, with elaborate wood trim and a substantial wraparound porch. The walk from Bremond Block to the Treaty Oak and the HOPE Outdoor Gallery takes about 20 minutes and covers several layers of Austin history.
