Mount Bonnell

Address 3800 Mt Bonnell Rd

Mount Bonnell, in the Covert Park on the western edge of the city, offers the best elevated view of Austin and the Colorado River valley. The 102 stone steps to the summit take about five minutes to climb, and the reward is a panoramic view over Lake Austin and the Hill Country stretching west. At 775 feet, it is the highest point within the city limits.

The park surrounding the summit has picnic tables and quiet walking paths through cedar and live oak. This is a popular destination at sunset, when the light on the river valley is excellent, and the views are particularly fine in early spring when the wildflowers are out on the slopes. Take Exposition Boulevard north of 35th Street and follow the signs; parking is free but limited.

A story
Mount Bonnell is Austin's highest point at 775 feet — though "mount" is generous for what Texans elsewhere would call a hill. It has been a popular excursion since at least the 1850s, and local legend holds that any couple who climbs it together will fall in love. This has produced an industry of marriage proposals at the summit, which has a comfortable viewing terrace over the Colorado River.
