East 6th Street

East 6th Street, east of Interstate 35, is a different animal from the downtown entertainment strip of the same name. This is the neighbourhood commercial corridor of East Austin — a mile of blocks lined with a shifting mix of taquerias, cocktail bars, coffee shops, and music venues that has been Austin's fastest-changing dining and drinking zone for the past decade.

The east side's 6th Street corridor is more local and less tourist-oriented than the Warehouse District or downtown strip, though gentrification has changed both the demographics and the prices. The highlight concentration is between Waller Creek and Chicon Street. On weekend evenings the corridor has its own bar-hopping culture, with crowds moving between destinations. The tacos, in particular, are taken seriously: several east-side taquerias are among Austin's most respected.
