Fort Cavazos

Fort Cavazos is the largest active-duty US Army installation in the country, covering more than 214,000 acres of central Texas. It is home to III Armored Corps and a succession of famous divisions, and its sheer scale means tanks, helicopters, and convoys are a routine part of the local landscape.

The 1st Cavalry Division Museum and the III Armored Corps Museum are both open to the public (with base access) and are worth the effort. The collections cover US armored and air assault operations from World War II through Iraq and Afghanistan, with a strong emphasis on personal accounts and equipment rather than abstract history. Access requires a valid ID; foreign nationals should check current base visitor procedures before visiting.

A story
Fort Cavazos is the only installation in the United States with enough maneuver space and infrastructure to support two full armored divisions simultaneously — a fact that shaped its identity as the spiritual home of US heavy armor. Established in 1942 as Camp Hood, it grew into a permanent post that has trained and deployed more armored forces than any other base in the world.
