Killeen

Central Texas military city shaped by Fort Cavazos and nearby lake country.

Killeen sits in central Texas, about an hour north of Austin, in the shadow of Fort Cavazos — the largest military installation in the United States. The town exists largely to serve the base, and that shapes everything about it: the demographics, the pace, the economy. It isn't a destination in the usual sense, but if you're passing through or visiting someone stationed here, there's more to do than you might expect.

The Fort Cavazos area has a pair of military museums worth a visit, particularly if you have any interest in armor or the history of the US Army. The surrounding countryside is genuinely appealing — Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake are both within a short drive and offer swimming, fishing, boating, and hiking. Around Christmas, Belton Lake hosts a light display that draws visitors from across the region.

Austin is close enough for a day trip, and Waco is about 45 minutes north.

Getting Around

Killeen is a car-dependent city and you will need a vehicle to do anything useful here. The city has no meaningful public transit, and distances between points of interest — particularly between town, the lakes, and the base — are too large for walking. A rental car is essential if you do not have access to a private vehicle.

Driving in Killeen itself is straightforward; traffic is light except near the main Fort Cavazos gates at shift change times (typically early morning and late afternoon on weekdays). For the lakes, US-190 east from Killeen leads towards Belton Lake, while Stillhouse Hollow is best reached via FM 2410 heading south. Belton town, about 15 minutes southeast, has additional services and restaurants.

Getting There

Killeen sits on US-190 roughly an hour north of Austin on I-35. The drive is straightforward: take I-35 north to Belton, then head west on US-190 into Killeen. There is no commercial passenger service at Killeen's airport; the nearest major airports are Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS), about 65 miles south, and Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW), roughly 150 miles north. Car rental is by far the most practical option — public transport connections are limited and the sites around town require wheels.

When to Go

Central Texas has hot, humid summers — Killeen regularly hits the mid-30s°C from June through August, and the heat can make outdoor activities at the lakes less pleasant during the middle of the day. Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are the most comfortable seasons: warm enough for swimming and hiking, cool enough to enjoy being outside. Spring brings wildflowers across the surrounding Hill Country, and the lakes are at their most inviting before summer crowds arrive.

Winter is mild by northern standards — frosts occur but snow is rare — and the Belton Lake Christmas light display draws visitors in December. If you are visiting someone stationed at Fort Cavazos, timing often matters less than convenience; the base and its museums are accessible year-round.
