George W. Bush Childhood Home

The house at 1412 West Ohio Avenue is a modest ranch-style home from the early 1950s — exactly the kind of house that a young oil company executive would have rented in Midland when George H.W. Bush arrived to seek his fortune. The Bush family lived here from 1951 to 1955, and it's where George W. Bush spent some of his earliest years.

The house has been restored to its 1950s appearance and is open for tours. It's a small, well-maintained period museum that gives some sense of Midland's post-war boom years — the era when oil money was transforming West Texas and young families from the East Coast were arriving to be part of it. The contrast between this modest bungalow and the White House is part of the point the museum makes.

Tours are available on a scheduled basis; check ahead for current hours.

A story
The Bush family moved to Midland in 1950 when George H.W. Bush came to work in the oil business. His son George W. grew up on these streets, attended San Jacinto Junior High, and played Little League baseball in Midland — an ordinary West Texas childhood that nonetheless produced the 43rd President of the United States.
