Munster Mansion

Few attractions in Texas are as improbable as the Munster Mansion, a full-scale working replica of the house from the 1960s television series The Munsters, built on a private property a few miles north-east of downtown Waxahachie. The exterior — gabled, cobwebbed, and deliberately ramshackle — gives way to interiors that recreate the sitcom's living room, kitchen, lab, and dungeon, including Grandpa's electric chair, the rotating suit of armour, and the trap door.

It is a private home most of the year. The owners open it to the public for two events around Halloween, with proceeds going to a local charity. Outside those weekends you can drive past for a look at the exterior, but please respect that people actually live here.

A story
Sandra and Charles McKee built the house from frame grabs of the 1960s sitcom — there were no architectural plans for 1313 Mockingbird Lane, only a Hollywood facade — and assembled the floor plan by measuring doorways and counting tiles against actors of known height. The grand opening in 2002 was attended by original cast members Al Lewis (Grandpa) and Butch Patrick (Eddie), who confirmed the interior felt uncannily right.
