A short walk west of the courthouse square, the West End Historic District is where Waxahachie's cotton-era prosperity is most visible in residential form. The streets are lined with Queen Anne, Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman houses built between roughly 1880 and 1930, with broad porches, ornamental gables, and the kind of mature shade trees that small Texas towns rarely manage to keep.
The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are no formal tours, but a self-guided wander down College Street and the surrounding blocks takes about 45 minutes and is the best way to understand why Hollywood location scouts kept coming back here for period films. Most of the houses are private homes — admire from the sidewalk.
