Halls Crossing Ferry

The John Atlantic Burr ferry crosses Lake Powell between Bullfrog Marina and Halls Crossing on the opposite bank, a distance of about five kilometres. It is one of the few ferry services still operating in the American West and cuts what would otherwise be a very long drive to a five-minute crossing.

The ferry runs on a regular schedule but is seasonal — check the National Park Service website for current timetables before depending on it for your travel plans. Vehicles of all sizes can use it, though queues can form in summer. Even if you are not crossing, watching the ferry cross against the backdrop of the canyon walls is worthwhile.

A story
The ferry crossing at Halls Crossing was established in 1881 by Charles Hall to move prospectors and settlers across the Colorado River — before the dam turned this stretch of canyon into a lake. The original ferry operated at a point that is now several hundred feet underwater. The modern John Atlantic Burr ferry resumed the crossing concept on the reservoir, connecting Utah Highway 276 across what is otherwise a 400-kilometre detour by road.
