Lake Powell Boating

The main activity at Bullfrog is exploring Lake Powell by boat. Houseboats, speedboats, and kayaks can all be rented at the marina, and the canyon arms of the lake offer extraordinary scenery — sheer walls of Navajo sandstone rising directly from the water, narrow slot canyons accessible only by swimming, and the eerie contrast of blue water against red rock in an otherwise waterless landscape.

Bullfrog is the jumping-off point for reaching Halls Crossing (accessible by the Wahweap Ferry), the Henry Mountains arm, and the more remote sections of the lake. For those with their own craft, the canyon arms north of Bullfrog toward the Escalante River are among the most impressive — though they require advance planning and knowledge of changing water depths. Fishing for striped bass is popular and productive.

A story
Lake Powell's canyon arms stretch for hundreds of kilometres, most of them unreachable by road. This means that the only people exploring the Escalante River canyon, the Dirty Devil arm, or the remote upper reaches of the Bullfrog Bay are those arriving by boat. At full pool (which has not been achieved in decades due to drought), the reservoir contained more stored water than any other in the United States. As water levels have dropped since the 1990s, previously submerged canyon landscapes have re-emerged — including Cathedral in the Desert, a soaring natural amphitheatre that was flooded in 1980 and began re-emerging around 2005.
