Hollow Mountain Gas Station

Hollow Mountain is exactly what it sounds like: a gas station and convenience store built inside a hollowed-out sandstone hill on the north edge of Hanksville. The space inside is genuinely remarkable — rocky walls, a low irregular ceiling, and shelves of food and drinks lit by overhead lights while the desert sun bakes the stone outside.

It is the kind of place you stop and stare at before you buy anything. The exterior looks like an ordinary red rock formation until you see the fuel pumps and the door cut into the side of the hill. Inside, the temperature stays several degrees cooler than outside even in midsummer — a practical advantage in a landscape where July temperatures routinely exceed 100°F. Hollow Mountain is open daily and is the main gas stop for travelers heading into the Henry Mountains or the remote canyon country south of town.

A story
The store and gas station inside Hollow Mountain was carved entirely by hand by a local man named Sid Swasey beginning in the 1940s. Swasey spent years excavating the interior of the sandstone knob using picks, shovels, and hand tools — creating one of the more eccentric retail spaces in the American West.
