Heber Valley Railroad

The Heber Valley Railroad runs vintage steam and diesel trains along a narrow-gauge line first built in 1899, ascending Provo Canyon toward Bridal Veil Falls and returning to Heber City. The journey through the canyon is genuinely scenic — red and grey cliffs, the Provo River, aspens in autumn — and the historic rolling stock is well maintained. The railroad operates themed excursions throughout the season: dinner trains, murder mysteries, holiday runs, and standard sightseeing trips.

Check the current schedule before visiting, as frequency and themes vary considerably by season; the dinner trains and themed rides sell out weeks in advance. The depot is on 450 South in Heber City. Round trips take about two hours depending on the excursion. This is one of the most enjoyable heritage railways in Utah and good value for a scenic half-day.

A story
The railroad's vintage locomotives have earned a side career in Hollywood. The wooden coaches and steam engines have appeared in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the television series Touched by an Angel, and several other productions that needed an authentic 19th-century train. The canyon scenery through Provo Canyon was enough of a draw that filmmakers kept returning.
