Heber City

Working Utah valley town near Park City, with reservoirs and the Heber Valley Railroad.

Heber City sits in a broad mountain valley about 45 minutes southeast of Salt Lake City and just over the ridge from Park City. It's a working Utah town rather than a resort — quieter and cheaper than its famous neighbour, with a good collection of cafes, diners, and motels that make it a practical base for exploring the area.

The two main draws are Deer Creek Reservoir, popular for boating, fishing, and paddleboarding, and the Heber Valley Railroad, a historic narrow-gauge line that runs vintage steam and diesel trains up the scenic Provo Canyon toward Bridal Veil Falls. The railroad's collection of locomotives has appeared in numerous films over the years. Check the current schedule before visiting — trip frequency and themes vary by season. Midway, five miles west, adds a geothermal swimming crater and a string of quieter resorts.
