Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity

The Trappist monastery on the edge of Huntsville is one of the more surprising places in northern Utah. The Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity was established in 1947, and the monks who live here follow the Rule of Saint Benedict — manual labour, communal prayer seven times a day, and a commitment to silence. Visitors are welcome during daytime hours, though the monastery church is open for prayer only and the cloister is not accessible.

The gift shop sells the monastery's own creamed honey, granola, and fruitcake, all made by the monks. The grounds are peaceful and the setting — fields and orchards against the mountains — is beautiful. The abbey sits about two kilometres north of the centre of Huntsville on the road toward Pineview Reservoir.

A story
The monastery was founded in 1947 by Trappist monks from Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky — the same monastery where Thomas Merton lived and wrote. The monks came to Utah at the invitation of a local rancher who donated the land. They support themselves through beekeeping and by selling creamed honey and granola from a small gift shop, which has become quietly famous among travellers looking for a quiet counterpoint to the ski slopes nearby.
