Shooting Star Saloon

The Shooting Star Saloon on Huntsville's main street is one of those American originals that has somehow survived into the twenty-first century unchanged. The building dates from 1879 and looks it — low ceiling, wood panelling, mounted animal heads, and an atmosphere that feels genuinely lived-in rather than deliberately rustic. It opens at 11am and closes when the last customer leaves.

The menu is minimal: burgers, hot dogs, chilli. The Star Burger — two patties topped with a split hot dog — is the thing to order. Cash only, and the portions are large. The Shooting Star is a destination in itself for visitors to the Ogden Valley who want to experience something that has nothing to do with ski resorts or outdoor gear.

Address: 7350 E 200 S, Huntsville, UT 84317.

A story
The Shooting Star claims to be Utah's oldest continuously operating saloon, open since 1879. The mounted head of a Saint Bernard named Buck dominates one wall, surrounded by thousands of dollar bills pinned to every surface. The bar's famous burger — a double patty with a hot dog on top — is called the Star Burger and has been on the menu since anyone can remember.
