Quail Creek State Park

Reservoir in the red sandstone hills west of Hurricane, with boating, fishing, and a surviving 1920s airmail navigation arrow on the hillside above.

Quail Creek Reservoir sits in the red sandstone hills between Hurricane and St. George, a quieter and cheaper alternative to Sand Hollow with similarly striking scenery. The park is popular for bass and trout fishing and for boating; swimming is permitted. It tends to be less crowded than Sand Hollow on summer weekends, and the entry fee is lower.

On the hillside above the reservoir, a large concrete arrow points northwest — one of the surviving markers from the transcontinental airmail navigation network built in the 1920s. Before radio navigation, the US Post Office installed several hundred of these arrows at intervals across the country, each accompanied by a rotating light beacon, so mail pilots could follow the route at night or in poor visibility. Most of the beacons are long gone, but the arrows — some 18 metres long — are too large to move and many survive. This one overlooking the reservoir is worth seeking out: it is an oddly moving remnant of an early chapter in American aviation.
