Zion National Park

Southern Utah's great canyon park, 25 minutes from Hurricane — slot canyons, soaring cliffs, and the famous Narrows hike.

Zion is 25 minutes northeast of Hurricane on State Route 9, and staying in Hurricane instead of Springdale (right at the park gate) means cheaper accommodation and a quieter base in exchange for a short drive. The park's main canyon is extraordinary — sheer Navajo sandstone walls in shades of cream, orange, and red, with the Virgin River running along the floor.

The Narrows slot canyon hike is the headline attraction: you wade upstream through the river between walls so close they block the sky. Angel's Landing is the other classic — a trail that ends with a chain-assisted scramble along a knife-edge ridge with sheer drops on both sides. It now requires a permit, obtainable by lottery. The Emerald Pools trails offer a gentler half-day with small waterfalls and hanging gardens of ferns.

In peak season (summer and holiday weekends) the park runs a mandatory shuttle system through the main canyon; private vehicles are not permitted beyond the visitor centre. July and August bring extreme heat and flash flood risk in the slot canyons — spring and autumn are the ideal seasons. The Zion–Mount Carmel Highway (SR-9) that passes through the park on the way to the east entrance is itself spectacular, including a tunnel cut through the sandstone with windows open to the canyon below.

A story
The Narrows is Zion's signature experience: a slot canyon hike through the Virgin River where you wade upstream through water that in places is only wide enough for your shoulders. The depth ranges from knee-height to chest-height depending on season, and the canyon walls rise 300 metres above. Waterproof sandals or neoprene socks make the difference between a miserable shuffle and a genuinely extraordinary walk.
