Ellen Eccles Theatre

The Ellen Eccles Theatre is Logan's main performing arts venue — a 1923 Italian Renaissance movie palace restored in 1993 to its original grandeur. The ornate interior, with its plasterwork, painted ceiling, and gilded details, makes it one of the finest historic theatre spaces in Utah.

The theatre is home to the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre, which runs a summer season of opera and Broadway musicals with professional casts — a cultural offering well above what you'd expect in a city Logan's size. Check the calendar; if a performance coincides with your visit, it's worth attending. The building is worth seeing even on a daytime walkthrough if the lobby is open.

A story
The theatre was built in 1923 as the Capitol Theatre, a movie palace designed in the Italian Renaissance style with an ornate interior of plasterwork, gilded mouldings, and a painted ceiling. When cinema moved to multiplexes and the building fell into disuse, a community campaign raised funds to restore it in the 1990s. The restoration is meticulous — attending a performance here feels like using a time machine.
