Logan

Cache Valley university town framed by mountains and linked to the Wasatch through Logan Canyon.

Logan is a university town tucked into the Cache Valley in northern Utah, surrounded by mountains on three sides. Utah State University gives it a youthful energy, and the setting — green farmland ringed by the Bear River and Wellsville ranges — is striking.

The town itself is small and quiet, but Logan Canyon heading east into the Wasatch Range is excellent — a scenic drive year-round giving access to hiking, fishing, and skiing at Beaver Mountain, with Tony Grove Lake the best high-alpine destination. In town, the Logan Utah Temple's twin Gothic towers dominate the skyline, and the Ellen Eccles Theatre hosts a surprisingly ambitious summer opera season. The Cache Valley is also known for its dairy farms, and the local cheese-making tradition is a genuine point of pride.

Getting There

Logan is about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City via US-89 or I-15 — roughly an hour and a half by car. There is no commercial air service to Logan; the nearest airports are Salt Lake City International and Ogden-Hinckley Airport.

Public transport options are limited. Utah Transit Authority runs a commuter bus route between Logan and Salt Lake City, but most visitors drive. Logan is also accessible from Bear Lake via US-89 over the Logan Canyon pass.

Things to Do

Logan's strengths are its canyon and its campus. The city centre offers a handsome historic temple, a good theatre, and a fine arts museum at Utah State University — but the real appeal is heading east into Logan Canyon, one of the most accessible and rewarding mountain drives in northern Utah.

When to Go

Logan's best seasons depend on what you're after. Summer (June–August) is ideal for hiking in Logan Canyon and surrounding wilderness, with long days and warm temperatures. The Cache Valley agricultural festivals and the Utah Festival Opera season run through summer.

Winter brings skiing at Beaver Mountain (mid-December through March), one of Utah's lesser-known but reliably good ski resorts. Spring wildflower season in the canyon and valley (April–May) is beautiful. The valley gets cold in winter — temperatures below freezing are common from November through February.
