Canyonlands — The Needles District

Remote canyon district with spires, arches, and all-day backcountry hikes

The Needles district of Canyonlands National Park is the closest entry point to the park from Monticello — about 45 minutes by car. This is the wilder and more remote side of the park, with towering red-and-white sandstone spires, deep canyons, and trails that reward full-day efforts.

Day hikes range from the Chesler Park loop to the Pothole Point trail and the Confluence Overlook. The terrain is rugged and trail-finding requires attention, but the landscape is extraordinary — few places in Utah feel more remote while still being reachable by passenger car.

A story
The Needles district was named for the colorful sandstone spires — banded in red and white — that rise in clusters across the canyon floor. The banding reflects alternating layers of iron-rich and iron-poor sandstone deposited when this area was a coastal plain near an ancient sea. Most visitors to Canyonlands go to the Island in the Sky district near Moab; the Needles rewards those willing to drive a bit farther.
