Deer Valley Resort

Deer Valley Resort is Park City's premium alternative to Park City Mountain: smaller, more refined, and deliberately exclusive. It bans snowboarders, employs more ski patrol per acre than almost any resort in the country, and provides a level of service — ski valets, groomed corduroy runs, mountain hosts — that feels closer to a European luxury resort than a typical American ski hill.

The mountain has 2,026 acres of terrain, with an emphasis on intermediate and expert runs. The grooming is exceptional — arguably the best of any resort in Utah — and the tree skiing in areas like the Mayflower and Lady Morgan chairs is outstanding in a fresh snow. The resort was the venue for moguls, aerials, and slalom events at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.

Deer Valley is about 10 minutes by car or shuttle from the centre of Park City. Day tickets are expensive and often sell out; book ahead for holiday periods.

A story
Deer Valley has a standing policy of limiting the number of skiers on the mountain each day — a unusual choice in an industry that typically maximises throughput. The result is famously uncrowded runs even on busy weekends, which goes some way toward explaining why it has won the Ski Magazine award for best resort in North America more times than any other mountain.
