High West Distillery

High West Distillery, on Main Street, was the first whiskey distillery to open in Utah since Prohibition and remains one of the most distinctive craft spirits producers in the American West. The distillery specialises in blended American whiskeys — combining sourced bourbon and rye from the Midwest with its own distillate — and has won numerous awards for its Rendezvous Rye and Double Rye expressions.

The saloon and restaurant on the ground floor of the historic building is worth visiting regardless of the whiskey: good food, a long list of cocktails, and a lively atmosphere that spills onto the pavement in summer. Whiskey tasting flights are available, as are distillery tours that explain the blending philosophy behind the High West approach.

It gets busy in ski season and during Sundance. Walk-ins are usually fine at lunch; dinner reservations are advisable. Located at 703 Park Avenue.

A story
High West was the first distillery to open in Utah since the state went dry in 1917. Getting a distillery license in a state run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints required considerable persistence and legal creativity; the founders ultimately opened in a former livery stable on Main Street, which seemed appropriate for a whiskey operation in a mining town.
