Checkerboard Mesa is one of the clearest signs that east Zion is a different world from the main canyon. The pale Navajo sandstone dome is scored with horizontal and vertical lines, making it look almost carved by a giant hand.
It is usually a roadside stop rather than a hike. Pullouts near the east entrance give the best view, and the surrounding slickrock is especially handsome in low light.
