Fleming Museum of Art

University of Vermont's art museum with 24,000 works spanning ancient to contemporary

The Fleming Museum of Art sits on the University of Vermont campus on Colchester Avenue, a short walk uphill from Church Street. Founded in 1931, it holds a collection of around 24,000 works — ancient Egyptian artifacts, medieval European art, a strong collection of Vermont and New England paintings, and rotating contemporary exhibitions. The building itself is a 1931 Colonial Revival structure that was expanded in 1961.

The Fleming is one of those pleasantly uncrowded university art museums where you can spend a quiet afternoon with genuinely interesting objects without the queues that plague bigger institutions. The Egyptian collection is the standout — mummy portraits, funerary objects, and carved stone pieces — but the American art galleries, which chart the visual history of New England from the 18th century to the present, are worth equal time. Admission is free for UVM students and affordable for others.
