Arlington National Cemetery

Over 400,000 graves, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

One of the most visited sites in the Washington area, Arlington National Cemetery holds the graves of more than 400,000 military personnel and their dependents. The cemetery is open every day of the year; a visitors center near the main gate provides maps and grave-location services.

The most-visited spot is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place every hour on the hour (every 30 minutes in summer). JFK's gravesite, marked by an eternal flame, draws visitors year-round. Nearby stands the Robert F. Kennedy grave site, and the mast of the USS Maine.

The Metro's Blue Line stops right at the cemetery entrance.

A story
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been guarded continuously since 1937 — through hurricanes, blizzards, and even a 2003 ice storm when the sentinels requested permission to remain at their post despite the dangerous conditions.
