Getting There

Fredericksburg is on the main rail corridor between Washington DC and Richmond, making it one of the most accessible historic towns in Virginia. Amtrak operates several trains daily on the Northeast Regional and Carolinian/Palmetto routes; the journey from Washington's Union Station takes about 90 minutes. The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) commuter rail also serves Fredericksburg from DC's Union Station and L'Enfant Plaza on its Fredericksburg line, with more frequent departures on weekdays.

By car, Fredericksburg sits on Interstate 95 about 90 kilometers south of Washington. The drive is straightforward but traffic on I-95 between DC and Fredericksburg is notoriously congested, particularly on Friday afternoons. The historic downtown is about 5 kilometers east of the main I-95 exits. A regional Greyhound/FlixBus stop serves the town from both DC and Richmond.

Fredericksburg station itself is a handsome old brick building right on the edge of the historic district, within walking distance of the main downtown sights.
